The Color Purple

The Color Purple is a 1985 American epic coming-of-age period drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Menno Meyjes, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It was Spielberg’s eighth film as a director, and marked a turning point in his career, as it was a departure from the summer blockbusters for which he had become known.
The film is currently not available for viewing.

This movie gives a genuine view of what life was like for the blacks during early 1900s, portraying well their culture, society, gender inequalities everything. This movie did a justice to the actual novel though some parts of the story I found is either just brushed over slightly or some are omitted. But the relation between the two sisters, from the very beginning to the end, the way the actors acted them out is incredible. Some scenes almost brought tears in my eyes especially during Cellie-Nettie separation and then their reunion, Shug’s teaching Celie to smile naturally, Celie’s emancipation, Albert’s late realization of his mistakes and much more. Overall this movie is a classic, timeless masterpiece with consistent scenes almost throughout.
“A book so good that it broke me.” Yes, the book had been probably the best piece of work I read in 2022. The movie had been in my wishlist since the day I started turning the pages. So, I’d thank the professors for deciding on this masterpiece.
Well, coming to the “review” of the movie, I’d say that there are n number of movies available on racial repression and blacks-and-whites. But, “The Colour Purple” had really been successful in avoiding the general mainstream kinda story lines. Avoided the stereotype content. The story had been a very rich one both in characters and the analysis, including the story line. Although the minute details ain’t possible to be showcased in a limited time-frame, but the portrayal of all the major character, especially the grey ones is commendable.
What an eye treat to end the year with!
